Non-Combustible Pedestal Paving System

Straightforward, robust paving system for waterproofed substrates

The Non-Combustible Pedestal Paving System offers a high-quality yet economical solution for creating raised paving areas on roof terraces, balconies, inset balconies and other external spaces.

Designed around non-combustible paving pedestals and achieving a Euroclass A1 fire rating, the system provides a safe, durable and versatile pedestal paving solution for both residential and commercial developments.

  • Fully non-combustible system achieving Euroclass A1 fire rating
  • Full system height build-up from just 30mm to over 500mm
  • Fast and simple two-step installation process
  • High-quality paving finishes available in a range of styles and designs
  • Enables efficient drainage beneath paving surfaces
  • Suitable for grid, stack and brick-bond paving layouts
  • Available with visual wind uplift restraint
  • 30-year warranty and 60-year design life*

For projects where non-combustibility is not essential, we offer a range of conventional pedestal paving systems providing greater flexibility. Alternatively, where additional structural support and stability are required, our TerraSmart Rail Paving System provides a versatile alternative to traditional pedestal paving systems.

*Valid when used as part of a complete RYNO system.

System Variants

This system is available in four variants, each designed for specific project requirements.

Fixed Head

The Fixed Head variant is a practical and efficient solution for projects with flat or level substrates and minimal falls.

Best suited for: Flat terraces, balconies and podium decks.

  • Most popular option
  • Simple, rapid installation
  • Independently rotating paving spacers
Exploded render TerraSmart Pedestal Paving Support System

Self-Levelling

The Self-Levelling variant is the ideal solution for tapered waterproofing systems and sloping substrates, automatically correcting falls of up to 10.5%.

  • Best suited for: Tapered insulation and flat roof applications.
  • Suitable for tapered flat roofs
  • Slope correction up to 10.5%
  • Lockable self-levelling mechanism

Low-Height Stackable

The Low-Height Stackable variant provides a practical solution for areas with restricted height build-up requirements.

It can also be used alongside other pedestal variants to overcome localised height challenges.

  • Best suited for: Thresholds, door interfaces and low build-up balconies.
  • Super low-height system build-up
  • Support height from just 10mm
  • Stackable in 2mm or 10mm increments

Visual Wind Uplift Restraint

The Visual Wind Uplift Restraint is designed for roof terraces and balconies exposed to higher wind loads.

Project-specific wind uplift calculations are recommended to ensure sufficient restraint performance. RYNO can assist with these calculations.

  • Suitable for high wind applications
  • Subtle mechanical restraint mechanism

Frequently Asked Questions

What loading can the system achieve with these pedestals?

The TerraSmart Non-Combustible Pedestal System with Porcelain Tiles is designed as standard to achieve a 2.0kN concentrated load and 4.0kN/m2 uniformly distributed load. Other loadings can be achieved on a project by project basis.

Is the plastic head non-combustible?

No but due to its function as a shock absorbent gasket, it is exempt under regulation 7(3) and is not required to be non-combustible.

How can I get the pedestal close to an upstand if the edge is sloped?

For the RP-FR pedestal system, we offer a pedestal cantilever bracket that is designed to support cantilevering pavers up to 100mm.

Can I lay any type of paver on the pedestals?

All RYNO porcelain and concrete paving options can be used with pedestals. Natural stone should be supported on the TerraSmart Rail System. All pavers being used on pedestal systems must be calibrated to a recommended tolerance of +/-2mm.

What are the Edge Spring Clips used for? Are they mandatory?

Edge spring clips are designed to maintain a 10-12 mm perimeter gap in accordance with the British standard BS 8579:2020. The edge spring clip goes on the head of each perimeter pedestal and is designed to ensure that pavers are kept in line and that they don’t move out of alignment in the long term. Edge spring clips are not a mandatory component; however, not including them will lead to long-term movement of the pavers.

Can I mix a pedestal system with a rail system?

Yes, it is possible to go from a pedestal system to a pedestal and rail system. However, it’s important to consider the application and the interface details between the two systems to ensure long-term movement doesn’t occur. It’s important to also consider the efficiency of switching between a rail system and a pedestal system.

Do I need a pedestal in the middle of the slab? / How many pedestals do I need under each slab?

All RYNO porcelain and concrete paving options require one pedestal at each corner of the slab. A central pedestal is not required.

However, this may not apply to all third-party porcelain tiles. The strength and suitability of porcelain tiles for pedestal-supported applications can vary depending on how they are manufactured. Some tiles have deep profiles or indentations on the underside, designed to improve adhesion in traditional bedded installations. These can reduce the tile’s strength when supported only at its corners.

If using paving that has not been supplied by RNYO, we recommend checking with the paving manufacturer that it is suitable for use on a raised pedestal system and whether any additional support is required.

What is zinc nickel electroplating?

Zinc-nickel electroplating is a high-performance protective coating applied to steel components to improve corrosion resistance. It provides significantly greater durability than standard zinc coatings, making it well-suited to external construction applications where long-term performance and reduced maintenance are important.

There are areas where the pedestal tiling abuts an area of gravel, what can I use to prevent the paving creeping?

It is recommended that an aluminium edge restraint is installed to hold the gravel in position and provide a firm interface for the paving to abut.

Do your non-combustible pedestals have fire certification?

The RYNO non-combustible pedestal ranges, RP-FR, RPS-FR and RD-FR are all inherently Euroclass A1 (non-combustible) in accordance with the European Commission Decision 4th October 1996 (96/603/EC). BROOF(t4) certification is available for download from the system page.
