The Challenge: Designing an Inclusive and Therapeutic Outdoor Space

Rochdale Infirmary, supported by the NorthCare Charity, embarked on a mission to create a restorative environment for dementia patients and their families. The goal was to establish the Oasis Garden, a safe and inclusive outdoor area that would provide a therapeutic escape from the clinical hospital setting. The challenge was to balance aesthetics, safety, and functionality while meeting the unique needs of patients with dementia or cognitive impairments.

The Solution: Quadro Non-Combustible Systems and Collaborative Design

RYNO was proud to support this initiative with innovative paving solutions, the TerraSmart® Rail Paving System to help create a visually striking and secure space. The project utilised RYNO’s RD-FR non-combustible adjustable pedestals for ultimate safety and compliance, alongside carefully selected Quadro Argento for walkways and Crema for seating areas. These colour contrasts serve as visual guides for dementia patients, enhancing usability and accessibility.

RYNO’s contribution addressed critical elements of the project:

  • Safety and Compliance: The non-combustible adjustable pedestals ensured a secure foundation, meeting stringent safety standards while accommodating uneven surfaces in the garden.
  • Design and Functionality: The Quadro systems provided both durability and an aesthetic appeal. The color-coded areas offered clear pathways and designated seating zones, making the space intuitive for patients and visitors alike.
  • Collaboration and Expertise: Working closely with project managers, RYNO’s team ensured seamless integration of materials and systems, contributing to a flawless

Overcoming Challenges: Tailored Solutions for Accessibility and Comfort

The Oasis Garden project presented several unique challenges, all of which were addressed through thoughtful planning and collaboration:

  1. Creating Dementia-Friendly Features: Recognizing that dementia patients often benefit from visual and tactile cues, RYNO’s systems incorporated contrasting colours and textures to enhance navigation and usability.
  2. Ensuring Mobility Accessibility: Planters and flowerbeds were designed at appropriate heights for wheelchair users and individuals with limited mobility, fostering engagement and participation in gardening activities.
  3. Safety in All Conditions: Non-slip surfaces and fire-resistant materials provided peace of mind, ensuring the space could be used safely in various weather conditions.

Real Results: A Calming and Inviting Retreat

The Oasis Garden has become a sanctuary for up to 500 patients and their families annually. The thoughtful integration of RYNO’s Quadro systems into the design has transformed the garden into a visually appealing, functional, and safe space.

A Note of Gratitude:

Karen Casper, Corporate Fundraising Officer for NorthCare Charity, expressed her enthusiasm for the completed garden:

“Research shows people with dementia benefit greatly from fresh air, exercise, and quiet outdoor spaces. This project has provided a safe haven for patients and their families, while also supporting staff wellbeing. We couldn’t have achieved this without the incredible collaboration of our partners.”
