MODE London is the complete refurbishment of 125 London Wall, transforming the 18-storey office building into premium workspace complete with multiple roof terraces and outdoor breakout spaces for tenants.
Originally, the external paving package had been designed using porcelain from one manufacturer and a separate pedestal system from another. While this met the initial design intent, it left uncertainty around system compatibility, wind uplift performance and long-term maintenance.
RYNO was brought in to provide a fully integrated solution that delivered greater confidence in performance while simplifying installation and future maintenance.


The Challenge
The project included roof terraces across Levels 6, 7, 15, 16, 17 and 18, each designed as high-quality outdoor amenity spaces for building occupants.
The original specification combined products from multiple manufacturers, creating challenges around how the complete system would perform once installed.
One of the biggest concerns centred around wind uplift.
The proposed solution relied on bonding porcelain paving directly to pedestal heads. While this secured the paving, it offered limited flexibility for future maintenance, making access to the waterproofing beneath considerably more difficult.
The Level 18 rooftop bar also presented an additional challenge.
Designed as a communal destination with significantly higher footfall than the other terraces, the original pedestal-only proposal offered limited stability over the insulated roof build-up and was not considered the most suitable solution for the expected loading.


Solution + Process
Following a review of the specification, RYNO proposed a fully integrated paving system designed to improve performance across every terrace.
For the main terrace areas, the project utilised Cario Warm Sand porcelain paving together with RYNO’s hidden mechanical wind uplift system. Rather than relying on an adhesive fixing, the concealed mechanical restraint system provides a tested method of resisting wind uplift while still allowing individual paving units to be removed whenever access beneath the terrace is required.
For the heavily used Level 18 terrace, RYNO recommended replacing the pedestal-only arrangement with the TerraSmart Lattice Frame Rail System.
The rail system distributes loads more effectively across the insulated roof build-up, creating a stronger, more stable platform better suited to the demands of a communal roof terrace.
This integrated approach provided consistency across the project while improving both long-term performance and maintainability.


Installation Benefits
Working alongside Trainor Stone & Tile, RYNO supported the delivery of the external paving package throughout the construction programme.
The installer praised the TerraSmart Lattice Frame Rail System for its strength, stability and ease of installation, particularly when compared with traditional pedestal-only solutions.
Despite programme delays on the project, RYNO’s manufacturing capabilities enabled the porcelain paving to be supplied within the required timeframe, helping the external works remain on programme.
This combination of technical support, product availability and integrated system design helped simplify installation while providing confidence in the finished result.
